Mercedes-Benz at the 2008 Paris Motor Show: Exemplary Efficiency, Top-level Protection and Breathtaking Design

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Paris, France, Oct 02, 2008

With the worlds most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine, the safest prestige limousine and a fascinating Design show car, Mercedes-Benz presents three exceptional highlights at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. While the new S 600 Pullman Guard and the innovative S 400 BlueHYBRID re-define technology standards in the luxury segment, the charismatic Concept FASCINATION study is the emotional-appeal highlight of Mercedes-Benz presence at the Motor Show this year at the City on the Seine.

The Concept FASCINATION study interprets the emotional appeal of a coup with fresh, surprising proportions, combining sporty-elegant design with stylish functionality. With this exceptional shooting brake design we are providing concrete insight into the future Mercedes-Benz design language. Some of the trend-setting features of the Concept FASCINATION will be found in our new models as soon as next year, for example, in our new E-Class stated Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The world premiere celebrated by the Concept FASCINATION design study in Paris signals both the end and the beginning of two design eras at Mercedes-Benz:
Dr. Zetsche thanked Professor Peter Pfeiffer, hitherto Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, for his 40 years of commitment and dedication, and greeted his successor, Gorden Wagener. Dr. Zetsche: for over four decades Peter Pfeiffer and his team, to which Gorden Wagener belonged for years, have again and again
developed exceptional product personalities. In this sense Gorden Wagener stands for continuity and the highest level of competence.

The new S 400 BlueHYBRID CO2 champion in the luxury segment

Among the technological highlights Mercedes-Benz is presenting at the Paris Auto Show this year is the S 400 BlueHYBRID. Slated for launch in summer 2009, this is the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car with a hybrid drive system. The combination of a modified V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine. The NEDC combined fuel consumption is a mere 7.9 litresper 100 kilometres. This makes for the world's lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class - just 190 gramsper kilometre. These exemplary figures go hand in hand with assured performance. The 3.5-litre petrol engine develops an output of 205 kW/279 hp, the electric motor generates 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 Nm. The result is a combined output of 220 kW/299 hp and a combined maximum torque of 385 newton metres.

At 190 grammes per kilometre, the S 400 BlueHYBRID is the CO2 champion in the luxury segment. Our flagship thus assumes the rle of technology trendsetter in the electrification of vehicles with internal combustion engine says Dr. Thomas
Weber, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management with responsibility for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Dr. Zetsche: the S 400 BlueHYBRID shows that we can indeed reconcile luxury, power, safety and environmental compatibility, disproving the claim that environmental compatibility can only be achieved by small cars. Mercedes-Benz buyers can reduce their CO2 and other emissions without having to downsize their dream cars.

S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine with highest protection level B6/B7

With the new S 600 Pullman Guard, Mercedes-Benz is continuing its unique tradition of building large, armoured, prestige limousines. For eight decades now, special-protection vehicles from Mercedes-Benz have served the heads of state of numerous countries, as well as royalty, as automobiles worthy of their standing. The S 600 Pullman Guard offers its passengers effective protection from attacks from the outside. Its Highest Protection status means that it has been engineered to resistance level B6/B7, as tested and certified by state-approved organisations.
The new S 600 Pullman Guard is luxuriously spacious and outstandingly comfortable. To ensure this spaciousness, the wheelbase of the special protection long-wheelbase S-Class was extended by a further 115 centimetres, making it 4315 millimetresin total. It is powered by a twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5.5 litresand an output of 380 kW/517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque. Its suspension and basic vehicle structure have been modified to cope with the greater weight.

Combining environmental compatibility and a passion for motoring

Presenting two further attractive model innovations in Paris, Mercedes-Benz underscores in an exemplary manner its ability to convincingly blend its motoring passion with environmentally-compatible technology. In the C 250 CDIBlue
EFFICIENCY Prime Edition, a new four-cylinder engine makes its first appearance. The new four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW / 204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres, allowing the saloon to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/hin just 7.0 seconds, on the way to its top speed of 250 km/h. Notwithstanding these exceptional performance figures, the Prime Edition only consumes an average of 5.2 litresof fuel per 100 km(NEDC), with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km. Spectacular dimensions in open-top driving are opened up by the new Mercedes-Benz SLRMcLaren Roadster 722 S. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/hin 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, this open two-seater even betters the standard set for open-air super-sports cars by the SLR McLaren Roadster.

2008 Paris Motor Show:The S 600 Pullman GUARD

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart, Germany, Oct 02, 2008

Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard: The new large state limousine from Mercedes-Benz

* Luxuriously spacious and superbly comfortable
* Twelve-cylinder engine with 380 kW/517 hp
* Stylish interior with electrotransparent partition
* Advanced entertainment system for rear passengers
* Integrated Highest Protection rated to B6/B7 level

Mercedes-Benz is proud to present a prestigious new luxury limousine the S 600 Pullman Guard with integrated Highest Protection. This new model is the latest in a long and unique tradition of large, armoured, prestige limousines from the world's oldest automaker. It was 80 years ago that Mercedes-Benz became
the very first car brand to develop and manufacture Pullman limousines with special-protection characteristics.

Mercedes-Benzs unique wealth of experience as well as its role as a technical pioneer in the construction of prestigious special-protection limousines a role which has been demonstrated time and time again over the years puts the Stuttgart-based premium brand in a class of its own in this demanding segment. This is why governments, heads of state and royalty all over the world choose to make dignified progress in Mercedes-Benz limousines which are eminently worthy of the "Pullman" label. Like the famous Pullman railway coaches, the
state limousines from Stuttgart are luxuriously spacious and outstandingly comfortable. The Pullmanname was originally used to designate the luxurious open-plan railway coaches built by the American Pullman Palace Car Company. As early as the 1920s, this name began to be used in the car industry to designate large, comfortable touring cars and prestige limousines with a partition between the driver's seat and the passenger compartment. Ever since, Mercedes-Benz has offered its customers Pullman limousines with an extremely spacious rear
passenger compartment. Particularly notable among these are the Pullman limousines with an extra-long wheelbase which have been offered by Mercedes-Benz since 1963 and which allow four passengers to sit opposite each other in truly grand style.

The luxurious Mercedes-Benz Pullman limousines offer their passengers not only a maximum of comfort, but also a superbly appointed setting for discreet meetings, equipped, of course, with all the key communications and entertainment systems.

Twelve cylinders and majestic proportions

The technical basis for the new Pullman limousine is provided by the S 600 Guard, the top of the Mercedes-Benz Guard range. It is powered by a superbly smooth twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cubic centimetres and an output of 380 kW/517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque. As these figures suggest, the S 600 Guard Pullman can call on effortlessly superior power delivery, allowing it to get out of a danger zone rapidly, should the need arise.

The vehicle owes its remarkably spacious interior to its 4315-millimetre wheelbase (115 centimetres longer than that of the long version of the S-Class). Indeed, with an overall length of 6356 millimetres, the S 600 Pullman Guard is a vehicle of truly majestic proportions which are enhanced by the harmonious design. Furthermore, the more steeply raked rear window enables a 60-millimetre increase in roof height which makes for more generous headroom in the rear compartment. As a result, the latter is now slightly higher than that of Mercedes-Benzs top-of-the-range S 600 model.

Moreover, the vehicle's ride height can be raised pneumatically by some 40 millimetres. In conjunction with correspondingly larger door cutouts, these characteristics ensure even greater comfort and dignity when getting in an out.

Extensive modifications to body and suspension

Although the Pullman version is based on the S 600 Guard, both the suspension and basic vehicle structure of the latter had to be modified extensively in order to ensure that the high Mercedes quality standards would not be compromised in any way by the extra-long wheelbase. It would be impossible to guarantee the long-term overall stability of the vehicle if the lengthening process consisted simply of inserting an additional body section. Measures to reinforce the vehicle structure were therefore included right from the design stage. Along with the armour steel in the protective cell, high-alloyed special steels are used in the sidewalls and floor assembly. These measures provide a sound structural basis for the installation of the heavy special-protection elements.

The Mercedes engineers have revised the air suspension system and chassis to cope with the extra loads associated with the protective elements. Notable details include:

* Reinforcement of the links between the suspension components and the bodyshell
* Specifically targeted modification of the suspension components themselves
* An additional brace (strut tower brace) between the front suspension struts
* Two additional steel springs at the rear to complement the air suspension
* Larger twin-calliper front brake discs for optimum deceleration at all times
* Run-flat wheels developed by Michelin (PAX), featuring an inner supporting ring on a special wheel rim and offering outstanding run-flat properties even when the tyres are completely deflated

Furthermore, the suspension is designed to ensure that the excellent level of comfort typical of Mercedes is maintained despite the increased weight of the vehicle.

Even the electronic control systems such as ESP have been adapted by the chassis specialists to optimise them for the changed requirements. This is particularly important in order to ensure that the driver can always count on the support of these assistance systems, not least in emergency situations. In addition, the S 600 Pullman Guard is fitted with the full complement of airbags as well as a new windowbag which was specially developed for the Pullman in order to protect all the passengers in the extended rear compartment.

It goes without saying that the new S 600 Pullman Guard has been through an extensive test programme and has undergone comprehensive quality testing like all other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Stylish and elegant interior

Fine woods and exquisite leather every detail of which is crafted to perfection lend a stylish and elegant ambience to the interior of the new Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard. Characterised by sheer luxury in a way which is both unobtrusive and unmistakable, it is designed to offer the maximum degree of comfort. In keeping with the Pullman tradition, the rear compartment is nothing less than a lounge on wheels where four passengers can enjoy the journey in comfortable face-to-face seats.
A standard-fit electrotransparent partition with an advanced lightweight structure provides a sight and sound barrier between the high-ranking passengers and the driving area allowing the former to engage in conversation, make phone calls
or use the standard-fit rear entertainment system without being disturbed. The partition becomes opaque at the touch of a button. This effect is possible thanks to a layer of liquid crystal film made from electrically conductive polymer material, which is integrated in the glass and whose crystals rearrange themselves to make the glass transparent when an electric current is applied. As soon as the electric current is switched off, the liquid crystals lose their clear-glass arrangement and the panel becomes opaque. Of course, the upper section of the partition can also be lowered electrically. A standard-fit intercom ensures that the driver and passengers can communicate at all times.

As one would expect, the new state limousine comes with a very high level of standard equipment. This includes a powerful, specially optimised, rear-compartment air conditioning system and a unique, state-of-the-art infotainment system which is able to play all popular media formats in outstanding quality. The visual centrepiece of the system is a newly developed 19-inch flat-screen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen format), outstanding contrast and colour depth. It is housed behind the rear-facing seats and deploys when required. The system, which is able to show DVDs, digital TV and other video sources in excellent quality and also offers connectivity for USB memory sticks and MP3 players, is operated by means of a convenient, high-quality control unit with an integrated 6.5-inch touch-screen display and DVD drive housed in the centre console between the rear-facing seats. An extra remote control can be used as an alternative. Outstanding sound reproduction is provided by high-quality loudspeakers in the doors and rear shelf. An interface for internet access and a high-performance refrigerator compartment are also included as standard equipment.

Improved multicontour seats and soothing back massage

The standard-fit V12-design individual rear seats offer a high level of comfort. In addition to their more comfortable geometry (their backrest angle is less upright than that found in the standard S-Class), they are equipped with massage and multicontour functionality as well as active ventilation. The individual rear-facing seats featuring electric fore/aft adjustment and seat heating have the same high-quality design.

A particularly striking feature of the interior is the centre console which is structured both functionally and visually to form several sub-consoles. The individual fine-wood elements have leather-trimmed lids.
The console between the forward-facing rear seats is equipped as standard with a thermostat-controlled refrigerator compartment (down to 4 degrees Celsius) and cupholders.

Between the backrests of the forward-facing rear seats, two touch-opening compartments provide stowage space for a mobile phone and two beakers.
The rear-facing individual seats are also separated by a console with a large stowage compartment for beakers or bottles. In addition, the face
of the console which is inclined towards the forward-facing rear seats accommodates the air-conditioning controls and the control unit for the rear entertainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display.

Situated between the rear-facing seats are cupholders, an analogue clock and air outlets for the separate, powerful rear air conditioning system.
The remaining space at foot level is occupied by another compartment with a wooden cover which can be used to hold a telephone, for example.

Electric roller blinds for unrestricted all-round vision

Newly developed electric roller blinds for the windows in the rear compartment provide protection from prying eyes. Compared with curtains, this sophisticated roller-blind solution has the advantage that the rear passengers can enjoy almost unrestricted all-round vision when the blinds are rolled up, whereas curtains limit the field of vision, even when open. Furthermore, the roller blinds reinforce the sense of interior space.

Ambient lighting in the rear creates a welcoming atmosphere in the dark while pivoting lighting with spotlights for all rear passengers provides ideal conditions for reading and working in the new S 600 Pullman Guard. What's more, the rear compartment lighting units comprising reading and interior lights are housed discreetly in the grab-handle module.

Safety of the very highest calibre

The driver and front passenger of the S 600 Pullman Guard as well as the occupants of the VIP individual seats in the rear compartment benefit from the all the restraint functions which can be found in the S 600. These include front airbags which deploy in one or two stages, depending on the situation, sidebags, specially developed windowbags for the longer rear compartment, belt tensioners and NECK-PRO luxury head restraints. The rear-facing seats are equipped with classic head restraints and three-point seat belts. The response behaviour and reaction times of all the restraint systems have been adapted in line with the extra weight of the new Pullman limousine. This ensures that the occupants benefit from the highest Mercedes-Benz standards of safety.

Technical innovations from the S-Class on board

The S 600 Pullman Guard offers most of the technical innovations which make the Mercedes-Benz S-Class the number-one trailblazer in passenger car development and the world's best-selling luxury saloon. These include important developments such as the new COMAND APS system.

Mercedes-Benzs night view assist system reduces the risk of accidents during the hours of darkness. This system is based on infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye and will therefore not dazzle oncoming traffic. Two infrared headlamps illuminate the road, significantly extending the drivers range of vision when on low beam. An infrared camera mounted on the inside of the windscreen picks up the reflected image of the road ahead and displays this in the instrument cluster.

Integrated special protection for outstanding safety

Furthermore, the new Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard offers its demanding passengers effective protection from terrorist attacks. Its Highest Protection status means that it has been engineered to resistance level B6/B7, as tested and certified by state-approved organisations, and also meets additional requirements which are not stipulated by any standard but which are tested by public and independent organisations. Its armour resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive charges. Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

In order to ensure that the vehicle offers effective protection, specialists with many years of experience in this field apply the principle of integrated special protection to the Pullman limousine. In effect this means that, rather than retrofitting the protective elements in the doors, rear wall, side panels, roof lining and firewall, etc. of a vehicle which has already been built, they fully integrate them into the bodyshell during the assembly process, an approach which provides additional reinforcement for the body structure. The resulting vehicle offers hallmark Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with comprehensive Highest Protection characteristics, even in those areas where retrofitting would be all but impossible. The basis for this is the long-standing, continuous and close cooperation with nationally and internationally recognised security authorities. For decades, this has ensured that the Mercedes specialists have been able to continuously increase their expertise in the fields of development and manufacturing while also applying their vast experience in vehicle protection technology and ballistics to meet the highest standards.

Thanks to the seamless integration of the special-protection features, the paint quality and corrosion protection match the high standards of Mercedes-Benz series-production vehicles.

Fully equipped for emergencies

The special-protection equipment package for the new S 600 Pullman Guard also incorporates the following features (selected examples):

* A pneumatic emergency control system for the power windows, which operates independently of the on-board electronics
* A special-protection fuel tank that reseals itself if perforated by shrapnel
* A panic alarm system which can be activated from anywhere in the vehicle. It locks the doors to create a protected zone and alerts the outside world by means of a visual and audible alarm signals. It also allows communication with the outside world via an intercom
* An optional rear camera which monitors the area behind the vehicle
* A heated front windscreen and heated (in the area of the mirror triangle) front windows, and this despite the use of special glass
* An infinitely adjustable doorhold system for all four doors
* Rear doors that are pulled shut automatically over the last few millimetres

Meeting individual requirements

The new S 600 Pullman Guard is, of course, a Mercedes-Benz through and through with all that that implies in terms of the scope it offers for individualisation with a wide range of paint finishes, leather appointments and wood trim elements. Even unusual customer requests can be met with the designo range which allows the most specific of requirements to be turned into reality.

With its generous spaciousness and comfort as well as its top-flight technology and appointments, the new S 600 Pullman Guard is a worthy successor to the long line of state limousines from Mercedes-Benz. It all began with the special-protection variant of the "Nrburg" 460 (W08) series of 1928. At the beginning of the 1930s, this was followed by the 770 (W07) "Grand Mercedes" which provided protection befitting the status of Japanese Emperor Hirohito, to name but one prominent user and by further special-protection variants of the 500 (W08) and 770 (W 150) model series. In the 1960s, the legendary Mercedes-Benz 600 took on the mantle of state limousine for a period of almost thirty years, which saw it serve as an official vehicle not only for the German government, but also for many other countries' leaders and royal houses. Further special-protection Pullman versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Guard followed their distinguished predecessors.

Uncomplicated service and comprehensive support

It goes without saying that all Mercedes-Benz Guard vehicles can be serviced or repaired at any Mercedes-Benz service outlet anywhere in the world a key component of the brand's comprehensive, uncomplicated, high-level service concept.

Mercedes-Benz at the 2008 Paris Motor Show: Emotions, driving pleasure and innovative, environmentally friendly technology

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart, Germany, Oct 02, 2008

At the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exciting design study and two new, standard production saloons to demonstrate that automotive passion and environmentally friendly technology can complement each other very convincingly. The Concept FASCINATION study interprets the emotional appeal of a coup with new, surprising proportions, and combines a sporty and elegant design with stylish practicality. Other highlights include the new C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition and S 400 BlueHYBRID models. Both are particularly fuel-efficient, and occupy the peak position in their segment with respect to both performance and environmental compatibility.

A new four-cylinder diesel engine is celebrating its world premiere in the
C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition. Developing 150 kW/204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres, this saloon accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. Yet it consumes only 5.2 litres (NEDC) of fuel per 100 kilometres (CO2 emissions 138 g/km). The S 400 BlueHYBRID, which is due to be launched in summer 2009, is the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car model with hybrid drive. A combination of a modern V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the worlds most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine(7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC), CO2 emissions 190 g/km). Mercedes-Benz is also presenting the new S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine with integrated Highest Protection features in Paris. Spectacular dimensions in open-top driving are opened up by the new Mercedes-Benz SLRMcLaren Roadster 722 S. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, this open two-seater puts all previous roadsters in the shade.

Sense and sensuousness a compelling interpretation of a coup concept

With the Concept FASCINATION design study, Mercedes-Benz has given fresh impetus to the long-established (although now rarely seen) "shooting brake".

This meets two different requirements a high utility value plus a coup which appeals to the heart with fast, thrilling lines . Freed from the constraints of a specifications book, the designers have created an automotive sculpture with great aesthetic appeal which demonstrates Mercedes-Benzs high level of design expertise.
Concept FASCINATION is a unique jewel of compelling automotive design, yet it still offers the benefits of a large luggage compartment. A particularly notable feature of the design is that the practical load space develops organically from the exciting and elegant lines of this lifestyle coup, giving it its special charisma. Attention to detail make this design study an incomparable gem which conveys at one and the same time a sense of sporty forward movement and elegance, savoir-vivre and exclusivity of the highest level.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, commented: "This design study continues the long tradition of exciting coups from Mercedes-Benz in impressive style. With its emotionally appealing lines, Concept FASCINATION offers a completely new interpretation of the coup concept. Its aesthetic, dynamic looks and painstakingly crafted details ensure that this study meets the highest design standards."

Taut, sharply contoured lines and finely sculpted surfaces

The Concept FASCINATION design studys elongated body is dominated by the dynamic front-to-rear sweep of its lines which gives it a dynamically charged look, evoking movement even when the vehicle is stationary. This impression is emphasised by the long, frameless, side-window line which describes a continuous arc from front to rear, uninterrupted by a B-pillar. As a result, the large load space in the rear is integrated in the vehicle body cohesively and harmoniously while also increasing the impression of length and creating a remarkable sense of lightness.

New twin-headlamp face and rear with a pronounced V-shape

The distinctive front section of this gracefully built athlete is a picture of self-assurance. It remains loyal to the twin-headlamp face, but interprets it in a more contemporary way. The rhomboid headlamps which are set against a grey background reveal the fascinating technical details of the light units with LED technology.
Like the front section, the forward-sloping rear has a pronounced V-shape and features a spoiler, below which the third brake light is reflected in the rear window. Flat, horizontal LED lights which extend around the back, linking it visually with the sides, emphasise the width.

Exquisite material mix and stylish luggage compartment

Generous use of fine materials such as leather, wood and aluminium, as well as high-quality woven fabrics and many carefully crafted details, ensures that the sporty and stylish character of the show vehicle is also underlined by the interior.
The floor of the load compartment, which measures approximately one metre square and folds up on the left and right, is made of wood with brushed aluminium protective rails. The centre of the load compartment is occupied by a folding smoked glass table which rises out of the floor at the touch of a button to reveal a refrigerated compartment for drinks and champagne flutes.

C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition

Efficiency and driving pleasure on a new plane will be provided by the C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition from autumn 2008 the first model Mercedes-Benz is equipping with a power unit from a completely newly designed diesel engine generation. This new four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW/204 hp and 500 Nm of torque from a displacement of 2.2 litres. The premiere model can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.0 seconds, on the way to its top speed of 250 km/h. Notwithstanding these exceptional performance figures, the Prime Edition only consumes an average of 5.2 litres of fuel per 100 km (NEDC), with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km. The engine impresses with its eager responsiveness and smoothness of operation. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "With the new engine, the C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition sets new standards in its segment with respect to performance, environmental protection and driving pleasure in short: efficiency at a previously unattained level."

Exemplary figures in terms of power output, consumption and emission characteristics are achieved by the new engine thanks to the implementation of
a whole package of innovative technologies. These include:

* a maximum ignition pressure of 200 bar,
* fourth-generation common-rail technology with a rail pressure increased by 400 bar to 2000 bar, as well as a new piezo-injector concept with direct nozzle needle control for greater flexibility in injection timing, leading to smoother running of the engine,
* larger, variable oil spray nozzles and variable water pump,
* dual-stage supercharging.

Fine detail work of the engineers reduces fuel consumption

In the C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition the new diesel engine is combined with a sporty six-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This, too, contributes to the great efficiency of the model. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz engineers have drawn up an additional package of measures in order to achieve the most exceptional consumption figures. This includes further aerodynamic fine-tuning, tyres with reduced rolling resistance and adaptive power steering.

Sporty genes, state-of-the-art engineering, extensive equipment

The basis of the new vehicle is the C-Class Saloon of the AVANTGARDE equipment line, in which the sporty genes of Mercedes-Benz come particularly to the fore. A ll the pioneering technical systems of the C-Class are on board as well: for instance, the AGILITY CONTROL package with situation-responsive shock absorber control, the Intelligent Light System with five different lighting functions and the PRE-SAFEanticipatory occupant protection system.

The C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition can be delivered in obsidian black, palladium silver or iridium silver. It is also optionally available in diamond white metallic. The edition is limited to 5000 examples.

Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID

Mercedes-Benz is launching the S 400 BlueHYBRID, its first passenger car model equipped with a hybrid drive system, in summer 2009. The combination of a modified V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine. The NEDC combined fuel consumption is 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. This makes for the world's lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class 190 grams per kilometre.

The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator. The system offers a double benefit, as it both helps to save fuel and increases driving enjoyment. This is partly due to the booster effect of the electric motor, as it powerfully backs up the petrol engine with a maximum additional torque of 160 newton metres during the high-consumption acceleration phase. The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The hybrid module also has a comfortable start/stop function, which switches the engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill for example at traffic lights. When it's time to move off again, the electric motor almost imperceptibly restarts the main power unit. This likewise makes a contribution to fuel economy and environmental protection: because the engine restarts first time, and practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase.

When the vehicle is braked the electric motor acts as a generator, and is able to recover braking energy by a process known as recuperation. Working in finely tuned partnership, the electric motor supplements the braking effect of the petrol engine and the wheel brakes to deliver a smoothly progressive braking action. The recuperated energy is stored in a compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment, and made available when required. This complex system is managed by a high-performance control unit, which is likewise located in the engine compartment.

A milestone on the road to electrification

The centrepiece of the modular, very compact and highly efficient hybrid drive system is the new high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which was specially developed for automotive use and is the first such unit worldwide to be introduced in a series-production vehicle. In this way Mercedes-Benz is making a trailblazing contribution to the electrification of the car, with the S-Class playing the role of the technological trendsetter.

Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries include a higher energy density and better electrical efficiency, together with more compact dimensions and a lower weight. Thanks to space-saving installation in the engine compartment, where it replaces the conventional starter battery, the interior space and boot capacity of the S 400 remain unchanged.

S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine

With the new S 600 Pullman state limousine intended for governments, business and crowned heads, the worlds oldest automaker is continuing its unique tradition of building large, armoured, prestige limousines. The very first Mercedes-Benz automobile produced as a special-protection vehicle ex factory was a Pullman limousine from the Nrburg 460 series (W08) introduced in 1928. Ever since, special protection vehicles from Mercedes-Benz have served the heads of state of numerous countries, as well as royalty, as automobiles worthy of their standing.

Like the famous Pullmanrailway coaches, the new S 600 Pullman Guard is luxuriously spacious and outstandingly comfortable. To ensure this spaciousness, the wheelbase of the special protection long-wheelbase S-Class was extended by 115 centimetres, making it 4315 millimetres in total. With an overall length of 6356 millimetres, this means that the S 600 Pullman Guard has truly majestic proportions. In addition, the new state limousine has an increased roof height in the rear for even more comfort and headroom. Following the Pullmantradition, four occupants can be seated in comfortable face-to-face seats behind a partition. The Mercedes-Benz Guard Pullman limousine therefore offers its passengers not only a maximum of comfort, but also a superbly appointed setting for discreet meetings, equipped, of course, with all the key communications and entertainment systems.

Newly developed on the basis of the S 600

The technical basis for the Pullmanlimousine is provided by the S 600 Guard,
the top of the Mercedes-Benz Guard range. It is powered by a twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cubic centimetres and an output of 380 kW/517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque. The suspension and basic vehicle structure have been modified to cope with the greater weight.

Furthermore, the S 600 Pullman Guard offers its demanding passengers effective protection from terrorist attacks. Its Highest Protection status means that it has been engineered to resistance level B6/B7, as tested and certified by state-approved organisations. Its armour resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive charges. Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

In order to ensure that the vehicle offers outstanding protection, specialists in Sindelfingenwith many years of experience in this field apply the principle of integrated special protection to the Pullmanlimousine. In effect this means that, rather than retrofitting the protective elements in the doors, rear wall, side panels, roof lining and firewall of a vehicle which has already been built, they fully integrate them into the body shell during the assembly process. In the process the entire passenger cell receives something akin to a suit of armour. The resulting vehicle offers hallmark Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with comprehensive Highest Protection characteristics, even in those areas where retrofitting would be all but impossible. The excellent ride comfort and superior handling performance of the standard models are also retained.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S

Spectacular dimensions in open-top driving are opened up by the new Mercedes-Benz SLRMcLaren Roadster 722 S. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, this open two-seater even betters the standard set for open-top super-sports cars by the SLRMcLaren Roadster. Both have a fully recessible soft top suitable for high speed driving, and are made from carbon fibre. This produces a very high level of safety and extremely high torsional strength. In addition to a higher engine output, the new Mercedes-Benz SLRMcLaren Roadster 722 S has an even more dynamic suspension setup and further aerodynamic improvements.

Despite the extraordinary performance of this thoroughbred roadster, its occupants suffer no compromises in terms of comfort and day-to-day suitability. With its decidedly sporty, high-quality interior appointments and manifestly obvious motor-racing genes, the new SLRMcLaren Roadster 722 S, a limited edition of 150, is able to capture the heart of even the most discerning car enthusiast.

Mercedes-Benz S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY: The most frugal S-Class ever

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart, Germany, Oct 01, 2008 From the end of 2008, Mercedes-Benz will be adding to its range one of the most fuel-efficient and therefore economical luxury saloons around in the form of the new S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. Effective detailed modifications and advanced technology have lowered the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the new model variant by some ten per cent compared to its predecessor, which was itself very economical. Features of the first BlueEFFICIENCY model in the S-Class range include on-demand power steering, an automatic transmission with standstill decoupling, as well as tyres with reduced rolling resistance. All without compromising the high standards of comfort, performance and driving pleasure in any way.

By bringing out the new S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, Mercedes-Benz is carefully pursuing its strategy for developing environmentally sound premium models that also encompasses the S-Class. The latest variant of the luxury saloon, which is due to supersede the S 320 CDImodel from the end of this year, is more fuel-efficient and, as a result, even more economical than its predecessor. With fuel consumption of 7.6 litres per 100 km (a reduction of 0.7 litres) and CO2 emissions of 199 g/km (a reduction of 21 g), the S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is set to achieve top marks in the luxury class. Mercedes-Benz has achieved such exemplary economy by incorporating a tailor-made BlueEFFICIENCY package. The packages key components:

* The power steerings hydraulic pump that is driven by an electric motor has an on-demand design, meaning that it only builds up pressure when the driver actually turns the steering wheel. This has the effect of reducing energy and fuel consumption when driving for long distances in a straight line such as on the motorway.

* The 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission is equipped with standstill decoupling. With this feature, the torque converter interrupts the power flow as soon as the vehicle draws to a stop with the engine running, in much the same way as the clutch on a manual transmission. This eliminates the converters hydrodynamic resistance, lessening the load on the engine and lowering fuel consumption. Standstill decoupling has the added benefit of reducing noise and vibration levels when stopped, and enables even smoother idling. The slip-controlled clutch engages the instant the driver releases the brake pedal, allowing the vehicle to move off without the slightest delay.

* The S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY rides as standard on 17-inch light-alloy wheels shod with reduced rolling resistance tyres, featuring a special carcass construction.
There has been no change in the V6 powerplants superlative output and torque figures of 173 kW/235 hp and 540 Nm respectively. Thus equipped, the S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY completes the sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds
and attains a top speed of 250 km/h.

The luxury saloon with fuel consumption and emission figures on a par with a medium-size car can be recognised from the outside by the BlueEFFICIENCY badge on the front wings. The S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY sees Mercedes-Benz further extend its line-up of models offering enhanced fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility.
The price for the S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY in Germany is unchanged at 70,864.50 (incl. VAT). The long-wheelbase version costs 78,718.50 (incl. VAT).

First Mercedes-Benz S-Class with hybrid drive due out in 2009

This autumn, Mercedes-Benz will also be unveiling its first ever passenger car model with a hybrid drive, the S 400 BlueHYBRID, that will be coming onto the market in summer 2009. The combination of a V6 petrol engine plus a compact hybrid module will make the S 400 BlueHYBRID the worlds most economical petrol-powered luxury saloon. It burns 7.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC) with CO2 emissions of 190 g/km. Mercedes-Benz will further-more be first to market with the lithium-ion high-voltage battery that is to be fitted in the S 400 BlueHYBRID as standard. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer is thereby making a seminal contribution to electrification of the car, with the S-Class once again assuming the mantle of technology trendsetter.
