2009 FIA GT Round 1 - Silverstone race result

SILVERSTONE, UK : May 3, 2009 - The first round of the 2009 FIA GT Championship, at Silvestone, provided an exciting race, punctuated by a safety-car period which both mixed and closed up the field. But Wendlinger and Sharp, in the K plus K Motorsports Saleen S7 proved to be a redoubtable force, and led for much of the race, despite spirited opposition from the Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati of Bertolini and Bartels.


The nr 14 Saleen S7R crossed the line 5.4 seconds ahead of the nr 1 Maserati, with the nr 19 Corvette C6R of Luc Alphand Aventures third, making three different manufacturers on the podium. Wendlinger and Sharp therefore retain the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy - the first drivers to do so since Walkinshaw and Nicholson in 1982. It is also the first time that Saleen will be inscribed on the historic trophy.

In GT2, victory went to the Prospeed Competition Porsche 997 GT3 RSR of Westbrook and Collard, after the leading AF Corse Ferrari went off in the final stages. Pecom Racing took a fine second place for Perez-Companc and Russo in the nr 95 Ferrari 430 GT2, with CRS Racing taking third with Rob Bell and Andrew Kirkaldy.

These are the best photos yet of Mercedes-Benz's second-generation CLS four-door coupe that will fastfivecars likely make its world debut at next year's Paris Auto Show with the first examples expected to hit showrooms by early 2011. Our spy photographers managed to come up close to a prototype model in Germany scooping the very first pictures of the 2011 CLS' dashboard that uses much of the styling cues established by the new C and E-Class models becoming more angular with sharper creases.

And they're off! Gumballers head out of Los Angeles on first leg of rally

Entrants of the 11th running of the Gumball 3000 started their cross-country rally Friday afternoon, cheered on by hundreds of fans as the cars began their journey at the Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles. The rally will also stop in Las Vegas, Sante Fe, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, and Orlando before finishing in Miami. Judging from the selection of vehicles, supercars were fastfivecars definitely the rides of choice this year.

There were a pair of Bugatti Veyrons, a handful of Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLRs, a Jaguar XJ220, SSC Ultimate Aero, Audi R8, and dozens of your standard Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Aston Martins. Of course, there were also a few non-standard rides, like this bio-diesel Land Rover, a metallic-green lowrider, and this bad boy. We were on hand to see the cars off as well, and brought back plenty of high-res photos that can be seen in the gallery below.

2009 Orange County Choppers Mazda Meet

This weekend was the second year that Orange County Choppers was nice enough to host an all Mazda meet at their amazing new location in Newburg, NY. My son and I spent the day there yesterday and we had a fun time. The initial weather forecast didn't look too good at first but the day wound up being really nice. Turnout was great and there were some really nice cars. Paul Jr. and Mike from OCC both showed up and signed some autographs. Fun day.
