NASCARs move to run the Car of Tomorrow in all of the races in 2008 is great for the teams, drivers, sponsors, race tracks and, most importantly, the fans. In the first five races the Car of Tomorrow has run, the average margin of victory has been a half second, more than 19 cars have been on the lead lap and 40 percent of the races have been won by a last-lap pass. By any standard, thats great, breath-taking racing. And the car is still new. Can you imagine how much better the racing will be after they work the bugs out? NASCAR deserves high marks for the success of the Car of Tomorrow. I cant wait to see it on the high banks at The Great American Speedway in front of one of our Texas-sized crowds.

--Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage, speaking before reporters after the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing announced on Tuesday that the racing body will fully implement the Car of Tomorrow races at the 2008 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, including stops at Texas Motor Speedway for the Samsung 500 and Dickies 500.

Singapore to stage F1 Night Race

Singapore has secured F1 rights for five years from 2008

Singapore will stage a Formula One Grand Prix next year, with the race set to be the first in the sport's history to be held at night.
It will be on a street circuit around the Marina Bay district, and is planned for September or early October.

"Singapore is going to be the leader with the street race at night - we're excited about the idea," said F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.

But Singapore's government says safety concerns will have to be resolved.

"Safety is of paramount concern to all of us," said Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Industry S Iswaran.

"Therefore, we will proceed with a night race only if the safety and operational requirements of all parties are fully met - if not, we will revert to a day race.
(But) a night race will be unique and allow the Singapore event to reach out to television audiences in Asia, Europe and the US."

Red Bull driver Mark Webber agreed the safety of the drivers must be absolutely guaranteed before night-racing could be allowed to make its debut.

F1 cars do not have lights and so the circuit would have to be brilliantly lit for visibility purposes.

"The power of the lights you would need to artificially light the place for visibility for the drivers, flag marshalling and other tasks would be enormous," Webber said.

"I think you could do it, but then there is a question of the rain or a blackout that could embarrass you if don't do your homework.
I have also done a few laps of a track in Singapore and there were a few places that needed to be made safer."

Singapore will stage the race for five years, with Ecclestone keeping the option to extend the deal for a further five years until 2017.

Ecclestone wants to expand the F1 calendar from 17 to 20 races per season, and the addition of Singapore is the second new race in two days after Valencia joined the circuit on Thursday.

"I am very pleased to welcome Singapore to the F1 family and we look forward to this exotic addition to the championship," said Ecclestone.

"This will be the first fully-lit street race in F1 and as a night race, we anticipate it will quickly establish itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races in our calendar. I know that the F1 drivers, teams and fans are all looking forward to coming to Singapore next year."

Singapore's government anticipates tourist revenues of around 33m from the event, and says it will cover 60% of the estimated cost.

"Singapore is a leading business centre and our aim is to be a vibrant global city that is abuzz with high quality entertainment and events," added Iswaran.

"A world class event like the F1 race, with more than 500 million viewers worldwide, will take us closer to this objective. By holding the race on a street circuit in Marina Centre, we will bring the buzz and excitement into the heart of the city, so that everyone can join in the festivities."

NASCAR bids goodbye to standard cars

Say goodbye now to the standard cars racing in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. With the close finishes seen on the initial runs of the Car of Tomorrow (CoT) races and the team owners set to finance only one race program at a time, NASCAR announced on Tuesday its plan to open the speedways only for the boxier vehicles of tomorrow.

Equipped with a set of rear wings and front splitters, winning cars at the five CoT races this year average .505 seconds lead, compared to 1.286 seconds with the standard car. And team owners seem ready to unburden themselves of an older vehicle that's only becoming a drain on money and resources.

It's very difficult for teams to run both the Car of Tomorrow and the current car simultaneously, said Joe Gibbs Racing president JD Gibbs. Let's implement it full-time in 2008. We are on board with that, and for us, it makes a lot of sense.

"Horsepower does not win races"

Stand on the lookout for car No. 44. Especially after its dismal performance at the Atlanta race of this year's Nextel Cup Series of the NASCAR. For one thing, the past loses have been edifying if you ask Toyota Racing Development vice president Lee White.

Horsepower is always great when youre selling engines, White said. But its not what wins races. What we found out when we got the power curves was that we did have equal horsepower on the chassis dyno, but at 7,500 and 8,000 rpm we were down by almost 40 horsepower to the teams that are winning all the races.

Expecting to break cover after the All-Star Challenge is the Toyota Camry determined to make it to the top. Toyota, with White at the front, was reported to have gone back to work on the engine since the Atlanta race. Its a little different tune which fills that in and the power curve has a much better shape, reported the vice president of Toyota racing.

At 32 years of age, the same as my father was when he made his final and most important career decision, it is time for me to compete on a consistent basis and contend for championships now. It is time for me to continue his legacy, and the only way I know I can [is] by taking the life lessons that he taught me: Be a man, race hard and contend championships. Since that is what I plan to do, I feel strongly that I would have my fathers blessing.

--Two-time Busch Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr., son of racing legend Earnhardt Sr., announcing his decision Thursday to leave his father's DEI race team. Junior has raced for DEI in his entire career, and opted out after months of failed negotiations with DEI officials and disputes with stepmom and team owner Teresa Earnhardt.

How's your NASCAR All-Star IQ?

Update: Looks like folk at SpeedTV have pulled out the animated All-Star IQ video and the embedded code is no longer working. I've posted a different video. Follow up from there. Or visit their site by clicking on the link below.

For those green in NASCAR, SpeedTV, the official cable network of the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge for the next eight seasons, beginning with Saturdays race at Lowes Motor Speedway, launched an animated NASCAR guide called All-Star IQ. The three-minute animation was written and produced by SpeedTV, and created by Limerick Studios. For all videos NASCAR, watch them here.
