Kimi Rikknen to Leave Formula 1 for Rallying?

Much has been speculated about Kimi Rikknen's future as his Ferrari deal expires in 2009. Fans the world over are desperate for the "Iceman" to stay in open wheeled motorsports' highest formula, but according to Fox Sports the current world champion hopes to one day take to the sport of rallying.
The Finn is not the type to break into a Shakespearean soliloquy. When questioned about his plans post 2009 the only words he could muster were, "I have time [to decide]."
Later the "Iceman" added, "Why should I hurry? I have a contract for 2009, which I will fulfill despite all the speculation. I always keep my deals."
When asked what he would like to do following his retirement, whenever it may be, the closemouthed Finn put forward a startling revelation that is sure to shock all but the most knowledgeable Formula 1 fans.
According to Fox Sports Rikknen is quoted as saying, "At some time I want to try rallying. That interests me; asphalt, gravel, and ice."
However, the world champion admitted that it may take some getting used to. "It's difficult to say, because I have never done a rally seriously. On asphalt I would probably be okay but on gravel I have no experience."
He also has concerns about coming to grips with having a co-pilot. "Having a co-pilot for me would be difficult. I am not used to that."
Taking all of this into account, it is important to remember that it is at the moment simply gossip. No official press conference has been held in which Kimi has openly spoken about his desire to one day compete in rallying.
Given his history, however, it is not an impossibility. The only thing that is for sure is that the current world champion will be racing next year, much to the delight of many fans.
What is your opinion on the matter?

Teams create new F1 association

The grids 10 squads have agreed to set up a Formula 1 Teams Association to provide a forum to discuss how the sport will operate in future.
Ferrari issued a statement announcing that the new organisation would be formed following what it called a "very constructive" meeting at its Maranello base on Tuesday between all teams, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and Donald McKenzie from the sports commercial rights owners CVC Capital Partners.
It said the new body will work with the FIA and Formula One Management towards establishing a new Concorde Agreement and future rules in the sport.
All the Formula 1 teams met today in Maranello and held an extremely constructive meeting, in the presence of Bernie Ecclestone and Donald McKenzie, the statement read.
The teams have subsequently agreed unanimously that they will establish the new Formula 1 Teams Association to work with the FIA and FOM to agree upon regulations and commercial conditions which will provide a framework for a strong and dynamic sport.
The Maranello meeting was called in response to a letter from FIA president Max Mosley earlier this month in which he asked the teams to come up with proposals for a radical shake-up of the rules from 2011.
Mosley said the aim should be to halve the costs of manufacturer teams, reduce fuel consumption and improve the racing.

Toyota Prius Shows Next Gen Body for First Time

The images confirm the rumors that the Prius would be growing in exterior dimensions the car seen here is both longer and wider than todays version meaning more usable space for backseat passengers and trunk storage. Toyota is said to be giving the Prius a power hike as well, supplying the car with better performance in addition to its beefier body. While one might expect that a larger more powerful car would indicate an attendant drop in fuel efficiency, were told that the new Prius will be even more fuel efficient than the old one. Thats a viable claim considering the pressure Toyota must be under to improve the vaunted mpg numbers for its green halo car.

While weve seen images of a Toyota test mule for the next generation Prius hybrid already, that earlier test vehicle was little more than a powertrain mule built from the current model with a new front fascia attached. These new images reveal much more; the very first look at the all new, next generation Prius.

Scroll down for the spy shooters own words on the next gen Prius and be sure to browse through our gallery of exclusive images above.

The worlds most popular Hybrid car, the Toyota Prius is getting a new look, and here are the first photos of it.
Caught earlier as a mule, with the new front welded to the old body, these are the very first photos of the completely new car.

One of the ways in which Toyota will pull off this trick new packaging is by replacing the current cars nickel-metal hydride batteries with smaller lithium-ion units. Reported solar panels on the roof also seem to be for real.

Look for the Prius to start a family in this generation as well, with possible station wagon and convertible variants reportedly on the table.

Other news about the Prius: the roof will get solar cells to power the air-condition, and it will also be built in a new plant in Mississippi, USA. So when you look under the next generation Toyota Prius, it could stand: Made in USA, underneath.

Except for the fact that the new Prius has grown, and is now longer and wider, especially the rear seat passengers have gotten more space, and the boot is bigger, rumors are talking about a whole family of Prius models. That means that we also will see a station wagon and maybe even a convertible with the Prius badge.

Insiders in Japan are talking about more power and yet still better fuel economy. There might even be a plug-in version this time which will be even more fuel efficient.

Other news that Toyota is working with, is that they will change the NiMh batteries for lighter and smaller Li-ion batteries. The Li-ion will not just make it possibly to load some more stuff in the boot because they are smaller, no, it will make the Prius faster as well.

BMW M3 Sedan 2009 Update

The new BMW M3 Sedan is the first four-door M3 since the E36. Youll immediately notice it doesnt look like a regular 3-Series sedan, but rather it shares the same front end treatment with the M3 Coupe.

The M3 Sedan is based on most of the same components as the coupe, delivering 420 horsepower from 4.0 liters and maximum torque of 295 pound-feet at 3,900 rpm. While the coupe targets the Audi RS5 and Mercedes CLK63 AMG, the sedan takes aim at the Lexus IS-F, Audi RS4, and Mercedes C63 AMG.

Unlike the M3 and M6 Coupes, the M3 Sedan does not have a carbon fiber roof. The Sedan comes standard with the same 18-inch wheels as the Coupe.

Power from the BMW M3 Sedans V8 is transmitted to the rear wheels through a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox or the companys seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch unit. The new final drive comes with a Variable M Differential Lock generating up to 100 percent locking action with fully variable action whenever required, ensuring optimum traction on all road surfaces.

The Sedan features driver-adjustable settings for crucial dynamic controls including steering, damping and stability. An available steering-wheel-mounted MDrive button can be used to store these preferences.

2009 Update

For the 2009 model year, BMW revised its M3 sedan after just one year on the market. Most notable is the change to the rear taillight design, featuring a notched design and drastically smaller reverse lights.

Other changes include the addition of the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with Drivelogic, plus a revised center console, active head restraints for whiplash protection, and a selection of new exterior colors.

Pricing

Prices for the M3 Sedan start at 53,800 $3,000 less than the coupe.

A premium package, priced at $1900, offers power folding mirrors, universal garage opener, digital compass mirror, BMW Assist, Novillo Leather interior and choice of three optional interior trims.

The technology package includes EDC, M Drive, Comfort Access, and a navigation system - all for $3250.

19? wheels are $1200, Electronic Damping Control is $1000, and Extended Novillo Leather can be had for $2000 as a standalone option or $1000 with the premium package. Enhanced premium sound is $1900.

Buyers seeking an open-air experience can opt to pay $1050 for a glass moonroof.

Motor Trend Blog: 2008 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport: Driving gently toward 2020

By Angus MacKenzie

I've been driving a Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport around Britain the past couple of weeks. It's a pleasant car: 17-inch AMG alloy wheels, bigger brakes all round, sports seats, and a swag of options, including something called the "Advanced Agility Package", which offers continuously variable rate shocks, paddle shifters for the five speed automatic transmission, sharper throttle response, and a sport mode button on the center console.

As equipped, this particular C220 CDI Sport stickers for about the same money as a base C350 Sport in Britain. But instead of the 268hp V-6 under the hood, there's a 170hp, 2.2-liter four cylinder turbodiesel. It's a solid engine, a little gruff at idle on occasion, but otherwise commendably smooth and quiet. With 295lb-ft on tap at just 2000rpm, it does a good job of shifting this 3494lb sedan - claimed 0-60mph time is under 8.5sec.

In sport mode the C220 CDI Sport is entertainingly brisk point-to-point, thanks to the more aggressive transmission calibration, though the ride deteriorates markedly, becoming noticeably jittery on anything other than the smoothest blacktop.

However, I've been more interested in the CDI bit than the Sport bit, and not just because I've been paying more than $10 for a gallon of fuel, or roughly 150 bucks for a full tank. The C220 CDI is a fascinating car because its claimed fuel consumption on the European combined cycle is precisely 42.8 miles per Imperial gallon. That's just a fraction over 35 miles per U.S. gallon, the fuel consumption Washington has mandated automakers must average by 2020.

Of course, there are significant differences between how the Europeans calculate city, highway and combined fuel consumption numbers, and how the Feds do it. But after more than 2500 miles on a mixture of freeways and country roads, suburban streets and log-jammed London, the C220 CDI has been averaging 33 to 35 miles per U.S. gallon. Our experience with the revised EPA mileage ratings introduced earlier this year suggests they are a much more accurate reflection of real world fuel consumption. So, on the evidence, the C220 CDI provides a glimpse of America's automotive future.

So, how does the future feel? In a word, gentle. Thrust builds differently in a diesel, even a relatively small capacity one. In the C220 CDI, the power peaks at just 3800rpm, and going much beyond 4000rpm is pointless. So it never sounds fast. After a while, you realize you're driving with a different, more relaxed rhythm -- always striving to maintain momentum; squeezing the throttle, rather than punching it; constantly mining the mother lode of torque. And suddenly, you find you're covering the ground just as quickly as you would in a regular gas-powered car.

Except you're getting way better mileage: On the freeways, humming along happily at 70-80mph, the C220 CDI returns close to 40mpg. Crawling through stop-start London traffic the equal of L.A.'s notorious 405 freeway crawl, or anywhere in Manhattan at 5pm on a weekday, it still manages 25mpg, automatic transmission, air conditioning, and all.

The Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI proves there's no question an average fuel consumption of 35mpg by 2020 is technically achievable in a reasonably sized sedan, albeit at a price (remember, this thing is basically C350 money). But it also suggests a lot of us are probably going to be driving very differently in 2020, too. With cars like this, our roads could become a much gentler place.

SPY:2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC supercar spotted

Finally, after such a long time with no info concerning the next Stuttgart supercar, we now get to see the first spy photos of a SLC prototype dressed in Merc clothes, not Dodge Viper.

And, guess what! The legendary Gullwing doors, that wrote history on the '50s 300 SL, are due to enter into production when the SLC is launched in 2010. Still heavily camouflaged, the future SLC appears to be a very dynamic car, judging by the largely dimensioned radiator grille and air intakes. It's still hard to tell the design of the headlights and tail lights from the whole body, but as you will see in the photos below, Christian Schulte may have got it right with the renderings he created. Or not?Is Huckfeldt once again right with his drawing?

The SLC won't use a mid-engine configuration, as previously predicted, but a front-engine one, thus contradicting those who had the SLC will follow Audi R8. For its SLR successor, Mercedes-Benz will cooperate with HWA and AMG;for the moment, the only certain power unit to be used under the bonnet of the SLC is the current 6.2 litres V8.

CAR Magazine:First Drives - Mercedes-Benz C 350 Estate Sport

Whats the point of the Mercedes-Benz C350 Estate Sport? Sure, it looks great and its got loads of power, but no way can a small estate (even a small Mercedes estate) be useful too. Surely youd just buy an E-class if you wanted space. Wouldnt you?

Should I just buy the salon, then?

Well, as it turns out, no - though I wouldnt recommend a camping holiday for four in the C350 Estate. First, its thirsty (youd rather have a C320 CDI if youre heading for the south of France) and no, its not the most capacious estate around. But its still pretty useful.

I packed four fully-grown blokes and luggage for a long weekend into it. No complaints about legroom, plenty of boot space for the bags, coats and travelling paraphernalia (thrown over the back seat - wed have struggled in the saloon). My passengers all appreciated the general level of finish, the air of refinement, seat comfort, and the ride. And there was plenty of entertainment for the driver too.

So the Sport in the name rings true, then?

Absolutely. The C-class is always fun to hustle and the C350 Estate has enough power to treat the weight of a full compliment of chaps and chattels with disdain. When a stretch down the M1 became too congested, we peeled off and headed across the Vale of Aylesbury, following the sat-navs shortest suggested route. Hit the Sport button and the dampers and throttle response tighten noticeably. You trade a slight edge to the ride for superbly sure-footed progress. Your passengers appreciate the swift progress and theres no wallowing or rolling to upset them.

Meanwhile the gutsy V6 revs to the heavens and wails appreciatively. Of course, the diesel makes more sense economically, but it lacks the petrol engines tingle factor and red-line appeal.

Verdict

Yes, its a lifestyle estate. And, yes, its hard to justify nearly 40k for it. But forget about the kind of lifestyle the ad agencies are always plugging: this isnt a mountain-bikes-and-dirt-tracks kind of car. Neither is it really a family car (theres acres more space in a Mondeo for half the price). But if your lifestyle involves the need for a swift, refined, compact, well-finished sports saloon with a premium badge, and you occasionally need to carry a healthy payload, this C-class is two cars in one.

World premiere for coaches: the new Mercedes-Benz Travego with Active Brake Assist

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

* Active Brake Assist actively helps avoid rear-end collisions and can
save people's lives

* Front Collision Guard enhances passive safety

* PowerShift automated eight-speed manual transmission reduces fuel consumption

* Numerous innovations in the new Mercedes-Benz Travego

* Presentation at the 2008 International Commercial Vehicle Show (IAA)

Stuttgart, Germany, Jul 30, 2008 The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz Travego takes front stage with a world premiere: for the first time the multiple-award-winning Active Brake Assist is being used in a coach. Known as an emergency-braking assistance system, when the risk of crashing into the rear of a slower vehicle ahead is acute, after giving graduated warnings this active safety system automatically brings about emergency braking if the driver shows no reaction.

Active Brake Assist is based on the proximity control system. It utilises proximity control's radar sensor, which with its three radar beams can recognise obstacles moving in front of the bus, within a defined range. The distance from and the speed relative to the vehicle in front are continuously registered and evaluated. If there is a risk of an accident and the traffic situation remains unchanged, first a graduated warning concept is applied and, after that, emergency braking.

Following the introduction of various active assistance systems like the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Lane Assistant, Continuous Braking Limiter, Brake Assist (BA) and proximity control, Active Brake Assist now marks a highpoint on the way to realising the vision of accident-free driving. It has successfully demonstrated its efficiency in Mercedes-Benz trucks in more than 350 million kilometres of customer operation.

The new-generation Travego also offers an innovation in the area of passive safety: the Front Collision Guard (FCG) is a unique passive-safety system to protect the driver and tour guide in a head-on crash, and also can prevent a car from riding under the bus. In the front section the bus framework consists of crash elements which dissipate energy in a specific manner in the event of an impact. In addition, the driver's position in the new Travego (including the steering. pedals and seat) is now arranged on a solid frame section which can be displaced in its entirety towards the rear in a severe frontal impact, enlarging the survival space by crucial centimetres.

Another highlight is the new Mercedes PowerShift transmission. This is the first automated manual transmission developed specifically for buses. This new eight-speed transmission significantly reduces fuel consumption and enhances safety and efficiency. The environment profits, too, because the CO2 emissions which are the subject of so much discussion are directly dependent on the level of fuel consumption.

Further new features which the driver can expect in his workplace in the Travego: the new cornering light function, the new rain/light sensor, LED lights as marker lamps over the windscreen, and an entirely new cockpit designed even more with the driver in mind.

The new-generation Travego will be presented to the general public at the 2008 International Commercial Vehicle Show (IAA) from 25 September to 2 October, 2008 in Hall 14/15.

All New Honda Jazz/Fit Revealed

The all-new Honda Jazz have been revealed a month ahead of its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, revealing a wider and lower grille with an optional glass roof.

Called the Honda Fit on the local market in Japan, the new Jazz builds on much of the technology of the predecessor like the fuel tank located in the centre of the vehicle with a flat floor.

It delivers stronger performance with improved economy and emissions from its two new engines, has more space and is even easier to use.

New ACE body structure

Even more efficient safety performance results from the introduction of the ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, a concept that is being progressively rolled out across the Honda range. Its structure, in particular a front polygonal main frame, helps to reduce the negative effect of misalignment between vehicles of different sizes and construction and multiple energy absorbing pathways disperse impact energy to prevent cabin deformation.

Standard on all models are dual front and side airbags, full length side curtain airbags and three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions, those in the front with dual-stage pretensioners. The front passenger airbag can also be deactivated to allow a rear facing child seat to be fitted to the front seat and for the first time Jazz is equipped with seatbelt reminders for both the front and rear seats. Front seats are also fitted with active headrests to minimise the potential for whiplash injuries.

Two ISOFIX fittings in the left and right rear seats together with tether anchors in the roof ensure correct child seat installation.

Larger, more refined cabin with even better functionality

The ingenious interior layout of the original Jazz, with its compact suspension and centrally-mounted fuel tank liberating more load space, together with the increased external dimensions of the new model, mean interior comfort has been taken to a new level.

Rear seat passengers now have 37 mm greater knee room, while the distance between front and rear passengers is up by 30 mm. The slightly wider body also means shoulder room increases by 44 mm in the front and 43 mm in the rear.

Visibility gets a considerable boost, too. Reduced width A-pillars, a larger windscreen and quarter windows three times the size of those in the previous model make for more relaxed driving, while retractable rear headrests ensure the view out of the rear window is now totally unobscured.

Magic Seats now one-motion dive-down

Given the popularity of the previous Jazz's innovative cinema' style rear seats, it comes as little surprise that Honda chose to offer a similar arrangement in the new car; but while the latest Magic Seats operate on the same principle, they are even more convenient since they have a one-motion, dive-down operation. No longer is there a need to move the front seats forward to collapse the rear seats. Instead, thanks to headrests that are virtually flush with the seatback, the 2:1 split rear seats are able to clear the front seats even when the latter are slid back to their rearmost position.
New Double-Trunk boot feature (1.4-litre models)

The outstanding practicality of the Magic Seats concept is complemented in the new Jazz by a flexible luggage area based on similar principles to the arrangement found in the Honda CR-V. Standard on 1.4 models, which are equipped with a tyre repair kit, the Double-Trunk boot features an underfloor storage area concealed by a double hinged panel - Regular Mode. The 230 mm deep, 64 litre capacity lower compartment is ideal for stashing sports gear or wet items, and once covered, won't soil other luggage.

The floor can be removed altogether or folded up against the rear seats to make full use of the total depth available - ideal for particularly tall objects (Tall Mode). Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the seat backs, its rear half can be folded up to create a load shelf at half height - so creating a double load space - Upper/lower Mode. Heavier items can be stored below, while lighter items can be placed on the upper shelf, and since it incorporates a load net, is perfect for carrying awkwardly shaped items, preventing them from moving around.

Total luggage space available is 399 litres in models with a tyre repair kit, greater than that of some compact MPVs and class-leading in the supermini sector. The previous Jazz had a total of 380 litres (VDA).

Refined cabin environment

High quality, pleasant-to-the touch materials, stylish design and tasteful colours give the cabin a more upmarket feel.

More comfortable front seats with better support, a driver's footrest, a height adjustable driver's seat, a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake and larger rear seats are just some of the features that contribute to the more cosseting, more relaxed cabin environment. Extra sound insulation and the increased body rigidity also play their part in making the Jazz a pleasant place to be. And for a real sense of spaciousness, the Jazz 1.4 EX is equipped with a panorama roof that extends over the rear seats for a great aerial view. Heat absorbing glass and a power sun shade ensure a comfortable cabin environment all year round.
