This is so wrong, in so many ways that we don't even know where to begin from. The monstrous eyesore you're looking at is called Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 999 Red Gold Dream and it's the work of Swiss designer (???) Ueli Anliker who claims to have spent more than 30,000 man hours and about 5 million SF, which comes to around $4,35 million US or �3,3 million, to complete the 24k gold festooned SLR. Both numbers sound absurd, but hey, we didn't expect to hear something rational from someone who obliterates a McLaren SLR in such an 'uber' kitschy kind of way.

Car News_ Hamann Volcano Based on Mercedes Mclaren SLR

The Hamann Volcano is a supersized version of what is already one of the world's most renowned supercars - the Mercedes McClaren SLR. Hamann technicians were able to boost the Mercedes Benz 5.4 liter, 626 hp, 780 Nm V8 and take its performance to 700 hp and 830 Nm of torque at 3,300 rpms; giving the Hamann a 0-100 km/h time of only 3.6 seconds.


How much torque does a volcanic eruption have? Well, it does indeed take a lot of steam to melt rocks and push the lava straight up through the earth's crust and Hamann-Motorsport does a good job of rivaling that with their own Volcano.


But performance is also improved by aerodynamics, with the addition of new lift-reducing wing extensions in both the front and the rear as well as new side skirt attachments and sheathings.



Interiors also get yet another luxurious do-over. It includes aluminium pedals, foot-rests, door sills, head-rests and floomats with the Hamann logo and the use of the top-quality material Alcantara for custom center console and dashboard parts.


No details on pricing were released.

Spied:Hamann SLR Volcano

Seen in these spy photos taken last week, the SLR project has yet to be announced by Hamann, but clearly we can see it will be called Volcano. Stand out features which catch our eye are the two-tone paint scheme, tripple-pipe exhaust, roof air scoop, rear bumper diffuser, deep-dish 3-piece Hamann wheels, rear wheel arch flares, smoked tail light lens and large rear wing


With the Volcano, Hamann joins a handful of SLR tuners such as RENNtech, Mansory and Brabus who offer a full tuning suite of products. We suspect official details will be released in the coming weeks.

Production of the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S will take place at the Formula 1 workshops of McLaren in Woking, England. The car will be made available by January 1, 2009.


Power for the SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S comes from the hand-built 5.5L V8 AMG engine producing 650-hp with a maximum torque of 604 lb-ft. Mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission that allows for a 0 to 62 mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds with a top sped of 208 mph. Mercedes-Benz also added a stiffer suspension, lowered the body by 10 millimeters at the front and back, improved the handling dynamics and added 19-inch lightweight aluminum wheels with red brake calipers.


Earlier last month, we saw spy shots that revealed that Mercedes-Benz and McLaren were working on a convertible version of the SLR McLaren 722. Today the two revealed the Mercedes-Benz McLaren Roadster 722 S, an open-top 722 that will see a limited production run of 150 units.Read All

Behind drawing board McLaren P11 Supercar

Stephenson will join McLaren in a couple of months and he will head up the designs for a small family of supercars set to be launched by the brand as soon as 2009. The engineering side of the development is said to be fixed with the Mercedes-sourced direct-injection 6.2-litre AMG unit mated to a double-clutch gearbox set to be incorporated, however the design is not.

It had been thought the design of the McLaren P11 had been signed off and was just waiting to be engineered into prototype form. But following a report by Autocar we can tell you the model's original designs have been scrapped and its back to the drawing board, a move that will put the model's launch date back by 12 months. It also explains the real reason why the company hired the former BMW, Mini, Fiat and Ferrari designer Frank Stapleton to head up their design team.

Rumours flying around also state that the P11 will spawn both an open-top and GTR race versions in the future.

McLaren are currently developing two new models, first up will come the successor to the Mercedes McLaren SLR � codenamed F11 which is expected to be launched in 2010. We will then see the McLaren F1 successor which is only known by its codename F12 at the moment.


McLaren are currently developing a new engine based on the current power unit found in the SLR. Rumours state the cylinder count could be increased from the current V8 to become a V10, power output figure should be in the region of 600bhp � that would be a lower than the current SLR. To counter this, the supercar maker will re-engineer and strip down the model to drop the overall weight to create the ultimate driving machine.


A group of renderings have surfaced on Slovenian automotive site avtmanija.com of what could be the McLaren F2 � successor to the all conquering Mclaren F1. Of course the jury is still out on this one, so we will leave it to our highly intelligent user base to offer their opinions below.

Renntech Re-tunes Mercedes SLR Mclaren 722 to 740hp

When we first heard of the Mercedes SLR Mclaren 722, we all licked our lips at the prospect of a 722 horsepower engine, but when the final figure of 650hp was released it left a sour taste in our mouth. Renntech soon put that sweet taste back with their own tuning package which boosted the supercar's power up to where it should be at 722 horses, and now by popular demand the tuning house has pumped yet more ponies out of the 5.4-liter supercharged engine bringing total power up to 740hp



For the upgraded tuning package Renntech have re-worked the ECU software and added a less restrictive motorsports-style exhaust system to get the extra ponies to the new Renntech Signature 10-spoke, 3 piece performance wheels.

New Info on Mercedes SLC/Gullwing Uncovered

The collaboration of the Mercedes-Mclaren SLR comes to an end next year as each manufacturer will go their separate ways to create a new model of their own. We already reported earlier this week some inside information on the Mclaren version, now come the turn of the Mercedes.

The new Mercedes SLC/Gullwing will be aimed primarily at the Porsche 911 Turbo with a target price of roughly �150,000 � both a coupe (codenamed C197) and a roadster (codenamed R197) will be produced and it will be slightly smaller than the outgoing SLR.

Mercedes will introduce a new advanced aluminium spaceframe technology which will contribute towards a target weight of 1650kg distributed 48% to the rear and 52% to the front which is 45kg less than the SLR. Mercedes are also reported to be developing a new composite brake system which is not just lighter but also stronger and less fade-prone than the conventional set-up.

The exterior design will be largely based on the SL class which has been received very well since its facelift earlier this year. Although There will be certain design elements which will tell it apart including roof-hinged gullwing doors, almost upright bi-xenon headlamps, LED tail lamps, a motorised rear spoiler and a pair of downforce-producing front and rear aprons.

Power will come from AMG's 6.3-litre V8 producing 550bhp and 445lb ft of torque, allowing the Gullwing to achieve 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds, maximum speed stands at 185mph � fuel consumption is said to be 14litres/100km.

The coupe is likely to make its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show with the roadster set to arrive a year later, there are only 6000 units of each model planned for production and is currently pencilled in to stop in 2013.
