BMW "No Reverse" Transmission Problem

An automatic transmission is just that- automatic, consequently most people tend to pay very little attention to it until a major problem rears its ugly head.

Picture the scenario- you are driving along in the lap of luxury, the satellite radio blaring and the heated seats on. You have become accustomed to the comfort level and great driving experience brought to you by BMW.



You decide to stop at the local convenience store on your way home to grab some ice cream for the kids and a bottle of water for yourself. Upon returning to your car, you start it up, check your rear view mirror, put the shifter in reverse and then the unthinkable happens- the engine just revs as if it is in neutral and the car goes nowhere!

This article deals with the reasons behind an unexpected loss of reverse in certain BMW automatic transmission equipped vehicles, specifically the 3 series and 5 series vehicles that use the ZF5HP19 or steptronic transmission. This includes the popular 323i, 323ci, 325i, 328i, 330i, 525i, 528i, 530i, X3 and X5 models well as some others built in the 1999 to present model years.

To eliminate confusion, this does not apply to vehicles equipped with the GM 5L40 E transmission, just the ones with the sometimes problematic ZF5HP19. The 5L40 E has some issues of its own that are beyond the scope of this article but are certainly going to be the subject of another.

The failure rate for these transmissions seems to be very high and is expected to become much more of a problem as time goes by.

Typically, the vehicle is working perfectly while driving forward but when it is put in reverse there is a complete and permanent loss of movement to back up.

Reverse is typically a major feat for any transmission to accomplish- imagine the demands that are placed on a gearbox as it is asked to reverse the torque of your engine so that you can back up your nearly 4000 pound vehicle.

By far, the most common cause of the reverse problem in BMW's is the failure of the D-G clutch drum. Specifically, the snap ring that retains the D or reverse clutch breaks out of the clutch drum resulting in an inability for the clutch pack to apply.

The good news is that there is hope in regards to a proper repair. The factory has released an updated part that so far appears to be a permanent fix for this problem.

In our testing and in conjunction with several hundred successful repairs at our facilities, the new part seems to be metallurgically superior in several ways.

We have found that there is an improved radius area as well as slightly thicker casting. In addition to this, the grove that retains the snap ring is also relocated further away from the edge of the drum.

With this issue addressed and attention to detail in several other areas of the ZF5HP19 unit, the transmission can be repaired to "better than new" condition by a competent transmission rebuilder / remanufacturer. In fact, when properly repaired, the ZF gearbox becomes quite robust and can provide an almost indefinite service life.

Mini dealership network to expand by 20% to meet demand

The first new dealer network, which comes online later this year, will be in Birmingham, Alabama. The next 18 months will see still more openings in urban hotspots like Austin, Texas and Seattle, Washington. For a complete list of new locations, hit the jump to read the press release.


The next 18 months will be huge for BMW's MINI brand. Execs are looking for big sales increases by 2011, and the fuel efficient little car company is adding 17 dealerships to its retail network in that time frame to help get the job done. The additional dealerships will predominantly go to urban areas that don't currently have a MINI presence, bringing the total figure to 100 dealerships in the States.


MINI is looking for a "double digit increase" from 2008's record 54,077 U.S. sales by 2011; a number that is impressive considering the current state of industry sales, but more likely due to the addition of a new model line (Clubman) as much as anything else. With more dealers in the fold, the lofty sales goals ought to be attainable, though, provided the nation's economy improves.

Spy Photos: Red BMW X1 Prototype Spotted

Our spy photographers have managed to catch BMW's X1 crossover virtually undisguised while undergoing testing on and around the famous Nurburgring.


Despite launching all X1s with xDrive (all-wheel drive), BMW is expected to offer sDrive (rear wheel drive) models shortly after launch.


Although the X1 won't be officially unveiled until the Frankfurt Motor Show, these pictures provide us our best glimpse of the upcoming BMW as only a few pieces of tape hide minor design details such as the character lines and rear tail lights.


At launch, the X1 will be offered with variety of powertrains including three diesels and one petrol engine. Diesel versions include an entry-level xDrive18d, an xDrive20d with 130kW (177hp), and a more powerful xDrive23d packing 150kW (204hp) and 400Nm of torque. So far the only confirmed petrol model is the xDrive18i, but don't be surprised if more versions are announced closer to production.


Look for the new BMW crossover to start arriving in European showrooms later this fall with a base price somewhere in the neighborhood of �20,000.

BMW M Concept envisaged Audi R8 Rival

Tired of waiting for BMW to come up with an Audi R8 rival, designer Idreas Noah created this independent design proposal for a sleek, stylish and aggressive Beemer.

Inspiration for the design came from flowing water and ripples, and the sides are inspired by what�s called in surfing terms �a barrel or tube.� The concept runs on a tweaked 5-l V10 from the M6, that would generate more than 400kW power. Dimensions for the M Concept are nearly the same as its targeted rival, the Audi R8.


Noah writes that the design for such a model has to be "Aggressive, Sleek, Agile and totally different from anything on the road today." Consistency with BMW's design paradigm is maintained by the "the trademark grille and hockey stick pillar."

Under the hood Noah envisions an amped-up version of the 5.0 liter V10 currently found in the M6.

Hartge adds more aggression to BMW�s X6 with new styling pack

There�s no shortage of tuners offering upgrades for the new BMW X6, and to add to this specialist BMW tuner Hartge has just unveiled its new aerodynamic kit for the sporty crossover. For those of you that have seen pictures of the high-performance X6 M and felt underwhelmed by the crossover�s rather mundane appearance, then Hartge�s latest kit may just be one of the best alternatives we've seen to BMW M's own styling.


The actual kit itself consists of a number of aerodynamic pieces, including an aggressive front spoiler, a custom rear skirt and side sills for both sides of the car. Meanwhile, there are also wheel arch extensions with air intakes at the front, and wheel arch extensions at the rear as well.


These modifications must be had in conjunction with Hartge's stainless steel tail pieces that accommodate four tailpipes, and also include a solid rear diffuser. Other mods available for the X6 include carbon-fiber exterior mirror casings and Hartge emblems to replace the BMW-badges on the bonnet and at the rear.


Overall, the Hartge kit looks much more impressive than the X6 M SUV, although the kit is only designed for the xDrive30d, xDrive35d, xDrive35i and xDrive50i models. We previously admonished a similar Hartge kit for the X6, but the new pictures taken in the studio setting really give it an aggressive appearance without appearing too desperate for attention.

BMW M3 passes 200mph with G-Power supercharger

When it comes to BMW tuning, there is one company that stands head and shoulders above the rest in cranking out the ultimate driving machines. The company we are referring to German outfit G-Power, which has been in the business of creating the world's fastest BMWs for a quarter of a century, including the recently unveiled 228mph M6 Coupe. Now, G-Power has finally unveiled a new performance upgrade for the M3, and with some serious performance mods in place the new car promises to be even more sublime than the standard model on which it�s based.


While a M3 bought from the dealership already has a fairly potent 420hp (312kW) under the hood, G-Power's engineers have taken the car into true supercar territory with a new supercharger system that raises the final power output to a heady 500hp (373kW). Using relatively soft charging of just 4.4psi (0.3bar) boost from the T1-518 ASA centrifugal supercharger (the same system used in certain Alpina models), G-Power claims that its M3 constantly provides around 20% more torque than the standard model.


The sueprcharger system also uses a large volume air box, including eight lightweight integral resonance induction pipes, which are responsible for improved throttle response and creating an optimal torque curve. Finally, the supercharger system is completed by the large air-to-air intercooler that is located up front and cools the boost temperature down for added performance and reliability.


Custom wheels and Michelin sport tires help put the power down onto the road, along with a new continuously height-adjustable G-Power coil-over suspension system with nine settings to help the BMW more effectively use that extra power. Additionally, G-Power offers a new sports rear muffler to give the M3 a deeper roar, and also lighten the car's final weight by close to 15kg.


The result of the new performance system gives the G-Power M3 a top speed in excess of 200mph, while the sprint to 124mph is dispensed within just 13.5 seconds - more than two seconds quicker than the stock M3.


Capping off the upgrades is a new interior, decked out in carbon-fiber panels, a custom G-Power speedo that goes up to 223mph, aluminum pedals and tailor made leather seats.

Hamann does its thing to the new BMW 7 Series

The arrival of the new F01 BMW 7 Series means that aftermarket companies have a new toy upon which to apply their talents. Enter Hamann, the German tuner with a penchant for Lambo-dooring, among other things. Thankfully, the firm's workup of the all-new 7 Series leaves the factory door hinges intact, but that's about it.


A new aero kit makes the big sedan less vanilla-looking with updated fascias, skirts and spoilers on both the rear decklid and roof. Naturally, a lowered suspension is offered, which, when combined with a selection of new wheels and the aforementioned bodywork, gives the �ber-Bimmer a nastier stance.


Inside, Hamann will fully customize the cabin appointments to your taste, or lack thereof. The Hamann 7 Series isn't necessarily all show, either -- an available sport exhaust upgrade for the 730d bumps power by 45 horses for a total of 290. Hamann's unlikely to stop with this batch of initial offerings, so more extreme modifications are probably inevitable. Just resist that primal urge on the butterfly doors, okay guys?

2010 BMW 5-series GT official images leaked

In late 2007 BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed plans for several all-new models including a design study called the Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS). Then, at March's Geneva Motor Show, BMW gave us the first tangible evidence of the new PAS in the form of the 5-series Gran Turismo (GT) concept vehicle.

Camouflaged prototypes have been making the rounds along the streets of Munich for several months now and today we have leaked official shots of the production that's due to go sale in Europe this November and in the U.S. early next year.


The body of the 5-series GT features a mix of elements from crossover, hatchback and wagon bodystyles, melding them together to create something that's relatively unique in the automotive world. While the styling may not be to everyone�s taste, BMW insists there's a market for a premium wagon with a coupe-like profile and plenty of innovative storage solutions. A take on the famous Hofmeister kink can be found at the rear of the window line, turning a very non-classical BMW profile into something more recognizable.


Clear differences between the production version and the concept are the smaller wheels, regular beige leather interior, rounded exhaust tips and new side mirrors.


BMW is yet to reveal what powertrain options will be available for the 5-series GT but expect to see fastfivecars of the engines from the new 2010 5-series carry over. BMW is expected to launch the car initially with a new eight-speed automatic and six-cylinder engines and then expand the range to include an xDrive AWD option and V8 powertrains.


At 4.99m in length, only the flagship 7-series is longer than it. This provides plenty of room inside for passengers but oddly BMW has added seating for only four. One of the vehicle�s standout features will be its new two-tiered tailgate. The design enables owners to partially open the tailgate for small packages or stretch it all the way for bigger luggage.

HAMANN Released details FOR 2009 BMW 7 Series

As a follow up from the initial photos, HAMANN has just released details

regarding the work they have done on the new BMW 7 Series (F01 and F02).

The exterior has been beefed up by installing a new front skirt with

integrated LED daytime running lights, a roof spoiler and a rear

spoiler. Four tailpipes poke out from the rear bumper. Side skirts are

part of the aerodynamic package and they also enhance the look.







The 730d has received a performance upgrade from the stock 180kW

(245hp). According to HAMANN this is only the first stage in the

engine's development. Power has been increased to 213kW (290hp).







Buyers can select from a range of wheels, from 19-inch to

22-inch in diameter. The top deep dish alloy rims are sized at

9.0Jx22 inches up front and 10.5Jx22 inches at the rear. They

come in a glossy black paint with a diamond-grinded rim star.

Respectively the matching tyres are 265/30ZR22 and 295/25ZR22.





HAMANN accessories are a given for this car. Some include aluminium foot

pedals and foot rests with matching embroidered floor mats.



The 730d and 740i receive four progressively coiled chassis springs each.

These lower the cars' centre of gravity by up to 40 millimetres. The 750i and

750Li have a different lowering kit which is made of two chassis springs and a

leveling kit.

Other noteworthy dream cars on the docket include the Morgan Aero Super Sport and Aston Martin One-77, two British supercars making their UK debuts.


Aston will also roll out its V12 Vantage and DBS Volante for the home crowd, while the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S and Maybach Zeppelin will be on hand for the first time in the UK as well. You remember the Veritas RS III? The open-cockpit supercar is a revival of the 40's-era BMW racing team, spearheaded by a crew of enthusiasts dedicated to making the fastfivecars visceral, back-to-basics driving machine known to man. With a choice of two BMW M-sourced powertrains � 480hp V8 or 600hp V10 � the Veritas hits 60 mph from a standstill in the three-second range en route to a top speed over 200 mph with either engine and no electronic aids. With a list price starting around $375,000, only 50 examples will be produced, and the first one has finally arrived.


After initially spotting a prototype at the N�rburgring, followed by details a year ago and more details last summer, the blitzschnell supercar is finally ready for its close-up and it's set to take place in London this July.
