Land rover Freelander 2 - Improving On The Good

 After the successful first generation Freelander 1 the Rover Group produced between 1998 and 2006, it now unveiled its successor in the Landrover Freelander 2 unveiled at the 2006 British International Motor Show. It was released in Europe in 2007 and was sold in the American markets as the Land Rover LR2.  Before getting officially announced at the motor show, the second generation Freelander was presented at the Kensington Roof Gardens in a lavish occasion featuring tennis sports celebrity Maria Sharapova before a team of journalists and media professionals.



A Better Freelander

Production of the Freelander 2 was moved from the Solihull plant in Birmingham to Halewood in England near Liverpool.  It now shared production of the Jaguar X-Type automobile.  It used a chassis based on the global midsized EUCD platform (European C/D class) that accommodated a larger transversely-mounted Volvo SI6 3.2 liter inline 6-cylinder petrol engine that also powered the new Volvo S80.

It came with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission.  The UK version didn't get this engine but instead got a 2.2 liter DW12 common rail turbo-charged diesel engine jointly developed with the French PSA (Peugeot Societe Anonyme) to power its new Peugeot Citroen cars.

With improved ground clearance and off-road handling capabilities, the second generation Freelander matched the Land Rover tradition for off-road superiority found in its Discovery and Defender line and proved superior to its European SUV rivals. In addition, the Freelander 2 sported improved interior quality, road safety features as well as modified Terrain Response off-road system used in the new Discovery III and upscale Range Rover.  The Rover Group and the Swedish Haldex Traction AB jointly developed its four-wheel drive system using the third generation Haldex coupling which was also fitted in the complete 2005 to 2008 Volvo models

The Landrover Freelander 2 was introduced in the US markets as the LR2 HSE in 2007 sporting the 6-cylinder 3.2 liter inline petrol engine capable of 230 hp on a 6-speed automatic transmission gear train.   It came with the luxurious interior appointments the US markets had become accustomed seeing in an SUV but was bettered with a Cold Climate System that heated the front windscreen and front seats at two heating levels as well as a heated windscreen water jet, a 14-speaker 440-watt surround system from Alpine, touch navigation screens, and bi-xenon headlights to mention some.
The Latest Freelander 2 TD4_e

The Rover Group launched the Freelander 2 TD4_e in 2009 which marked the first SUV in the UK to use an eco-friendly stop-start technology to economize fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.  The  in the designation stands for e-Terrain Technologies presumably referring to 'earth' and was Land Rover's answer to the emerging trends in environmentally friendly road vehicles.

With the e-technology, the engine stops when in idle gear and  instantly resumes when engaging the clutch pedal. A heavy-duty starter motor acts as a generator to recover energy from its regenerative braking using capacitors to store energy and restart the engine without engaging the starter battery.  The e-Terrain is expected to be used in subsequent hybrid Freelander models.

Compact hybrid Range Rover LRX gets green light

According to the report, Land Rover will borrow liberally from corporate partner Jaguar's hardware stable, which is rumored to soon include both hybrid and extended-range EV options. Land Rover's innovative electric drive rear axle is supposedly on the LRX menu, which would work along with the automaker's well-known and highly-effective Terrain Response System to put power to the ground wherever possible.


If there's any truth to these rumors, we shouldn't expect Land Rover to have the hybrid LRX in production until at least two years have passed. In the meantime, the British-built, Indian-owned automaker is set to debut stop/start and regenerative braking on all of its models to improve their environmental performance.


Automakers that hope to continue doing business over the next few years need to be increasingly aware of their fuel consumption, emissions and environmental credibility. In deference to this fact, Auto Express in the U.K. is reporting that Land Rover is moving forward with plans to launch the new LRX compact hybrid 'ute, possibly with a bit of help from the U.K. government.

New Details and Spy Photos for Range Rover Facelift

Fresh spy shots of a facelifted Land Rover Range Rover have emerged. The current model of the big luxury SUV has been on the market for the past seven years. It had a mild facelift in 2006.


A brand new Range Rover is only expected to start selling in the year 2011 as a 2012 model year so this second facelift is more like a stop-gap to prolong the lifespan of the current car. Due to hightened environmental concern the next-generation Range Rover is getting downsized. It was recently announced that the production version of the LRX concept which was unveiled in Detroit 2008 will inherit the Range Rover name.


The Range Rover is expected to get a couple of new engines, one of which is already fitted to its Jaguar XF cousin. This particular engine is the AJ-V6D Gen III 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo diesel which is found in the new XF Diesel S. It produces 275PS (202kW) and maximum torque of 600Nm. Such a torque figure would be quite suited to a vehicle of this size. The AJ-V6D Gen III S Diesel replaces the 2.7-litre that was popular with Jaguar S Type buyers.


These new images reveal a bit more exterior detail than previous spy shots. They show a front bumper with new fog lights and newly-designed rear lights. The front end is getting LED daytime running lights while the rear lights also get LED technology. Changes to the interior will only be minor because this part of the car was recently upgraded with higher quality materials.

Platinum R Rover Sport Concept802 wide body kits new image

Concept802 describe themselves as a "dynamic styling company" and founder Barry Graham has kindly sent us the following live images of the Range Rover Sport Platinum R wide body kit in the flesh without "computer enhancements" this time.


Concept802 also fits the Range Rover Sport with their own set of wheels - 3-piece forged alloy V2 wheels in a multi-spoked and "deep dish" design. Customers have a wide selection of sizes to choose from too, with rims starting at 19-inches and going up to quite a muscular 24.


The styling graces that Concept802 offer with this wide-arch kit includes new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, a new front grille, and a carbon fiber rear diffuser housing Concept802-designed exhaust tips for the Range Rover Sport.

And what can we expect next?

Range Rover Vogue Updated by Project Kahn

The Range Rover Vogue comes with a new Kahn body kit and a whole new personalized treatment on the interior cabin. Inside is the expected "bespoke touch" with a piano black finish but one tailor-made to the customer's own specifications.


The multi-spoke wheels with studded edges are derived from the original Kahn RS-L but designed specially for this Range Rover Vogue. With a titanium silver finish conveying the essence of the Vogue's identity, the wheel are also made to be fitted with several original center caps.


On the outside are the goodies from Kahn, as always. Along with the body kit they include a sports exhaust system and, the essence of Project Kahn tuning, those 22-inch alloy wheels made by Kahn.


It's those Kahn wheels that mark the Vogue as something unique. It's like the car is wearing very expensive jewelery. If flashy bodywear is your style, then Kahn is your tuner.


Project Kahn has announced its newest Range Rover Vogue edition and promises a more distinguished level of customization.

Range Rover Sport limousine with 6 wheels!

Some information is lacking, unfortunately, on this extremely prolonged Range Rover Sport. But it looks very brutal off. Certainly with that hip golden color.


The conversion is done by the English Vantage International Field that we still know of the Maybach 72. But personally I think this Range Rover with 6 doors and as many wheels a lot bolder. And it is obviously a piece civilized than some HUMMER H6.

This model faces some pretty stiff competition in the marketplace. Models such as the BMW X5 and X6 and the Audi Q7 come to mind. One may ask if Tata Motors is doing enough to keep the aging Range Rover Sport competitive in its segment. But, hey, its a Range Rover, with all the romance of stalking across the African continent that entails. Maybe that'll do until the next generation Range Rover Sport comes along.


Also, a new 5.0 liter V8 engine is likely to be coming with this upgrade, probably to replace the current 4.2 liter V8. No real details on power output have been leaked or made public but it suffices to say a supercharged 5.0 liter will have considerably more horses.


Land Rover may also replace the current 2.7 liter diesel available in the Range Rover Sport with a new 3.0 liter turbocharged V6.

The new kit for the Range Rover Sport, designed by Project Kahn and Cosworth, includes a new front spoiler, a Cosworth handcrafted mesh front grille and side vents, new side sills, side steps, stainless steel side bars that will only fit with side steps, new rear roof spoiler, a Cosworth rear valance and a lower boot spoiler.


For better handling a new Cosworth fully adjustable electronic module was added while under the hood the engine received a Cosworth 300 engine upgrade, a carbon-fiber engine cover and a new stainless steel exhaust silencer. The kit is completed by the new 22 inch multispoke wheels wrapped in 285�35x22� tires. Of course, everything has a price and for a standard customization program from Project Kahn you have to pay �70,000 ($116,118 or �89,142) while for a fully customized vehicle with every option installed you have to pay �122,226 ($202,758 or �155,684).


Also a rear multimedia kit was installed including twin 7� flat face flush mounted Alpine screens with Cosworth screen saver, multi-region dvd player and twin Phillips cordless headphones, as well as a new push start button, new iPod connection, head-up display unit showing both mph or km/h, colour reversing camera with integrated tv screen in the dashboard or, as an option, front and rear parking camera.


At the interior we find blue illuminated instrument dials, stainless steel door sill plates engraved with Cosworth logo, a new set of Cosworth aluminium foot pedals with black rubber grips, perforated Nappa leather interior with white stitching including front and rear seats, headrest, centre seat arm rest, front and rear door grabs, centre glove box, perforated gear knob and Cosworth leather or Alcantara hand stitched steering wheel.

Pricing of the model places it in the premium segment alongside competitors such as the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and the upcoming Cadillac SLX. With this in mind it is no surprise to learn the Land Rover Range Rover will get LED daytime running headlights and LED taillights to help it fit in. We can also spot some minor changes to the front bumper and grille of the fascia on this prototype caught by our spies whilst doing some rubber burning at Nurburgring in Germany.


We believe these tests are to fine tune the long rumoured 5.0-liter V8 set to be offered or possibly the new 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel due to replace the ageing 2.7-liter unit.


The third generation Range Rover has been on the market since 2002, it received a mild facelift in 2006 and these prototypes prove a second facelift will performed on the model in the near future to fill in its long life cycle before an all-new model is launched in 2013.
