Ryan Newman is Daytona 500s "new man". Ok that was a bad start but its true. Newman has etched his name in racing history by winning the 50th Daytona 500 last February 17 and by becoming the second non-Chevrolet driver to pull it off. Ward Burton was the last NASCAR driver to do it in 2002 by using a Dodge race car. Newman, who also won the IROC and ARCA series of the Daytona International Speedway, came close to winning the Daytona 500 last 2006 but fell short and had to settle for third.
Second place went to teammate Kurt Busch while the third place went to Tony Stewart. Stewart was actually in the lead but thanks to Buschs assistance, Newman was able to overtake him and win the race. Talk about making a sacrifice. This marks Buschs third runner-up placing in the Daytona 500.
Brother, Kyle Busch had a great showing but failed to capitalize on it and ended up in fourth place. Coming from the 24th place, Kyle surged to second place in 22 laps and managed to take the lead 86 times out of the 200 laps set for the race. However, his mistake of going below the yellow line as he headed into Turn 1 proved costly and allowed Tony Stewart to block and move past him.
Hampered by mechanical problems, last years winner Kevin Harvick had a disappointing finish and had to settle for 14th place.
As a result of his Daytona 500 win, Newman received a gold Harley J. Earl trophy. He was also part of the Daytona 500s induction ceremony and had his car displayed for viewing until the next Daytona 500.
