McLaren Mercedes suddenly interested in Heidfeld

McLaren is among the F1 teams which have the 2010 driver lineup still unsolved. Alongside the main contender for a seat at the Woking-based team for the next season, Kimi Raikkonen, there also appears the name of Nick Heidfeld, from the outgoing BMW Sauber.

According to Bild newspaper, Norbert Haug, president of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, has declared:"Nick's qualities are well-known to us. But still nothing is decided.". For a successful team like McLaren, such a choice comes as a complete surprise. The quality of a F1 driver stands almost always in the number of victories he achieved. And, in the case of Heidfeld, there were reported none in any of the 166 grands prix he attented. Moreover, Robert Kubica, Nick's teammate at BMW Sauber, has shown many times his supremacy over the German driver.

So, if Kimi Raikkonen demands 10 million euros or more as an annual remuneration in case of a contract, and apparently, Heidfeld can cope with less than 5, then it doesn't mean less is always better.
