Tires of Old and Toys

Tires were not very reliable, in the early years of motoring tire punctures were regular, and tire replacement difficult as they often were nailed to the rim.

But there were alternatives, if you had to avoid accidents, there was the wheel that had a bunch of coil springs instead of rubber. These strange tires sit on a German Prototypes of 1916, then a staff vehicle for the Army where accessibility was vital.

But the resilient rim was not new even then, the patent had already been submitted for horse cabs in 1870, and it is used today in Michelin's " Tweel "in heavy construction equipment.

This truck made by Turgan & Foy who really focused on service and production of railway carriages and cable cars helped to deliver the mail in France at the beginning of 1900's.  They closed down production in 1906 and made no further impact.

Here is the product info:

2011 Classic Formula 1 Calendar "Americana"
A tribute to American success in Grand Prix racing

Long before Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher became world champions for France and Germany respectively, United States of America produced two world champions.

Phil Hill from Santa Monica lifted the title in 1961 with Scuderia Ferrari driving the beautiful shark-nose 156.

Mario Andretti, in 1978, was the second American to claim the title in Colin Chapman's ground-effect Lotus 79.

We are proud to present the new 2011 Motorsport Memories calendar "Americana", a tribute to drivers who carried the American Challenge to distant tracks.

From Harry Schell, the first American to score points in Grand Prix racing, to Eddie Cheever, who drove for Ron Dennis in Formula 2 and raced with British, American, Italian and French teams in Formula 1.

Dan Gurney, the All American Racer and gentleman, talks about his wide and varied world of motor racing experience in an exclusive interview.

1 Brabham BT19 1966

Pencil on paper Paul Chenard 2007

The series highlights the 3 Formula 1 driver/constructors who won a race and gained championship points in the car they built.

Sir Jack Brabham won the World Driver's Championship for 1966, and Dan Gurney and Bruce McLaren both won a race in Spa in 1967, and 1968, respectively.

Sir Jack Brabham sent me a note when he saw the BT19 sketch:

Dear Paul,
Thank you for the very nice pencil sketch of the BT19.

Wow! I was thrilled to hear from Sir Jack directly.

Eagle Weslake - Spa 1967

Pen & ink and Primacolor pencils on white archival stock 4"x 9" Paul Chenard 2008

Gary Faules Collection

1967 was a big year for Americans in motor sport, and someone who was at the forefront of it was Dan Gurney.

He won, along with A. J. Foyt, the 24 Heures du Mans in a GT40 Mark IV and remains the only American to win a Formula 1 race in a car of his own construction at Spa in Belgium.

In his career, he won races in Nascar, Can-Am, Trans-Am and Indy. Later on, as a team owner/manufacturer, his cars would also win the Indy 500, and the IMSA GTP series.
