Small, strong and fast
Wolfsburg, 22 October 2009 - A new engine, the 1.2l TSI, is getting ready to follow the success of its predecessor. The 77 kW / 105 PS strong engine is now available for the Polo, Golf and Golf Plus and rounds off the successful family of TSI engines.
Highly efficient and at the same time low in emissions: Volkswagen wrote a new chapter in the history of petrol engines with the introduction of the TSI engines, which have caused quite a stir over the last few years. Volkswagen presented the next engine in the family, the 1.2 TSI, at this year's Vienna Engine Symposium. With this new engine, Volkswagen continues this intelligent downsizing and transfers new forward-looking TSI technology to even smaller displacements. The new engine is now available to order for the Polo, Golf and Golf Plus.
In order for the 1.2l TSI to be convincing in terms of performance, torque and torque curve despite the small displacement, the petrol direct injection engine is equipped with a turbocharger. Therefore, the maximum torque of 175 Newton metres is already available at an engine speed of 1,500 rpm.
The continued development of the engine technology of the small but powerful engine family consistently uses friction optimisation and lightweight construction. The engine is not only based on an aluminium crankcase. In addition, the completely re-tuned direct injection provides smooth power development, low consumption and low emissions. These features have already been rewarded in the "big brother" of the family, the 1.4l TSI, which has been awarded the prestigious "Engine of the Year" award three years in a row since 2006.
