Artist Pays Tribute to NASCAR in This is Where the Rubber Meets the Road

A Sample Artwork of the Artist

In the spirit of the NASCAR Champions Week in New York an artist from California named Steve Maloney is holding an exhibit at the Coda Gallery, an art gallery in New Yorks posh SoHo district. The exhibit entitled This is Where the Rubber Meets the Road experiments with crashed sheet metal from actual NASCAR racecars. The exhibit is an interesting take on the colorful and fast paced world of NASCAR as represented by various mixed media artwork.

The artist mentions that he found his inspiration for the NASCAR exhibit from another art collaboration that he had done previously. Maloney says that, I was involved in another pop-oriented series called 'Paintings by the Numbers'. They were paintings of fashiony female figures with large numbers on them. All of a sudden between the bright, primary colors and the numbers it hit me: NASCAR!

The main goal for mounting the exhibit is beautifully described in the artists website: Emblematic of the velocity, danger and commercialization that drive race fans wild, Maloney created This is Where the Rubber Meets the Road as a celebration not only of NASCAR, but of the spirit of America that runs through the sport's fuel lines. The wall-mounted and board-backed contemporary sculptural collages as well as free standing sculptures reveal the artist's innovative take on color and form, with dented sheet metal, tire scraps and scuffed advertising logos merged into dizzying arrays of previously mechanized beauty. While casual observers may need to rubberneck before realizing where the materials in works like Boggie Woogie No. 4, Homage To Mondrian came from, NASCAR fans will know in an instant.

Maloneys exhibit is a fresh take on the phenomenon that is NASCAR. Truly a must see as it is a re- interpretation of NASCAR as seen from the eyes of an artist who himself has done some racing in the Mexican 1000. A contrast of sorts confronts the person viewing Maloneys artworks. The artist succinctly describes it as an exhibit that shows not only the cars, but the 200 mph speeds and the dings of the crashes, too It is a delight to the visual sense as splashes and dashes of color excitedly fill ones sense of sight.

This is Where the Rubber Meets the Road will run from November 21-December 4 at the CODA Gallery in 472 Broome Street, Manhattan, NY.
