Gordon Accepts Defeat and Commends Johnson

Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson

It seemed that winning the 2007 Nascar championship was all but evident for Jeff Gordon. Given his impressive performance on track, NASCAR enthusiasts were betting on having him bring home the title. But enter Jimmie Johnson and the scene drastically changes. Here, we now find two immensely talented drivers going head to head for the championship. Sad to say, Johnson was driving better than Gordon. By the eighth race at the Texas Motor Speedway, Johnson was leading by 30 points. After the race at the Phoenix International Raceway, the gap between Johnson and Gordon was at 86 points with Johnson leading.

This early, Gordon is being realistic. He knows that unless Johnsons car drives badly during the championship race, the NASCAR trophy is as good as Johnsons. He is quoted saying It's over.Even if we win it, it's because they (Johnson's team) had problems. And while we'll accept it, we don't want to do it that way. Those guys have flat-out killed everybody. You've got to give credit where credit's due. Those guys deserve a lot of credit. We didn't step up and win the races when we needed to. We gave them a run for a while and now we've got to figure out how to get the best finish we can at Homestead and end this season off on a positive note going into the offseason.

Gordon is a good sport, he knows that while he had done his best for this season, Johnsons efforts deserve the championship cup. In fact, Gordon would rather busy himself with other things that are as worthwhile such as spending time with his family and being a hands-on dad.

Hendrick Motorsports, the team to which Gordon and Johnson belong to has been doing very well this season. The team has won 18 of the 35 cup races.

Jimmie Johnson is being touted as the next Jeff Gordon because he is now doing things that Gordon used to do. While the two racers are friends off track, Johnson would prefer to be his own person. He says, I don't want to be called the next Jeff Gordon. I'm Jimmie Johnson. I do it my way.
